What Makes Up WELLFLEX

CHONDROITIN SULFATES
Chondroitin Sulfates are chondroprotective agents that work against the destruction cycle of joint degradation and support the proper structure and function of healthy connective tissues and joints.

There are 2 major classes of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) found in connective tissues and joints. They are the molecules in cartilage that attract and hold water, which gives cartilage its elasticity and fluidity, thus allowing it to act as a shock absorber. Repeated stress, injury or disease can seriously weaken or damage the structural integrity of cartilage, leading to discomfort and a less active lifestyle. Chondroitin sulphates are also necessary to stop destructive enzymes from breaking down healthy cartilage.

As dogs age, there is a decrease and/or redistribution in the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which can result in joint stress, thinning of synovial fluid, and breakdown of connective tissue. It is important to note that the cells lining the joints (chondrocytes) require a steady supply of glucosamine in order to manufacture GAGs. Many cofactors in the WellFlex products contribute to the synthesis of these needed glucosaminocans.

GLUCOSAMINE
Glucosamine is an amino sugar that makes up the building blocks for proteoglycans found in the tissues of tendons, ligaments, cartilage, synovial fluid, skin, heart valves, and the eye.

Glucosamine is used by the body to produce glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) which give shape, elasticity and rigidity to the aforementioned connective tissues as well as intervertebral discs, the interstitium, and mucus membranes. Glucosamine supplementation enhances glycosaminoglycan synthesis. This enables the joints to hold more water thereby increasing joint flexibility, cushioning ability, and resiliency. Glucosamines make up fifty percent of hyaluronic acid, the principal component of synovial fluid. Glucosamine has been found to be one of the key nutrients for the support and repair processes of injured or stressed joints.

Glucosamine has been shown to stimulate GAG synthesis in cartilage matrix and synovial fluid as well as protoglycans and collagen synthesis. It works simply by providing raw material for GAG synthesis and provides enhanced joint repair.

The direct benefit of glucosamine appears to be protective and restorative, leading to less discomfort as well as greater mobility to the afflicted joints.

METHYLSULFONYMETHANE (MSM)
Methylsulfonyl-methane is an analgesic agent and a source of organic sulfur. Sulfur is an essential mineral found in various compounds and structures in the body, such as collagen, hormones, and immunoglobulins (proteins with antibody activity). Methylsulfonyl-methane enhances the rebuilding and restoration of joints and connective tissue.

Some of sulfur's functions in the body are maintaining cell membrane flexibility and permeability which allows for exchange of nutrients into and toxins out of the cell, maintenance of proper connective tissue function, and formation of collagen.

Sulfur deficiencies have been associated with slow wound healing, immune system dysfunction, poor skin health, and degenerative joint condition. It is very beneficial against discomfort associated with inflammation and disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Methylsulfonyl-methane provides raw materials to create new cells. The concentration of Methylsulfonyl-methane in the body can be reduced through the normal aging process and stress.

VITAMIN C
Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagens. It is essential for the conversion of the amino acid proline to hydroxyproline which is essential for the structure of healthy, newly formed collagens. This reaction is very important to the formation and stabilization of collagen. Without adequate Vitamin C, collagen cannot be produced. Vitamin C is required for the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) as well. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C protects collagen from tissue damage caused by free radicals.

MANGANESE
Manganese is an essential mineral that is required for the enzyme glycoslytransferease, which is essential for the formation of collagen, GAGs, and proteoglycans found in articular cartilage, skin and vascular beds.
